Phantom Blade Zero (PBZ)

How do you choose a backstep or a directional dodge?

The difference is whether a movement direction is held when you tap Dodge. Practice the two results in a clear space and note where the camera and your character end up. Your goal is to choose a useful destination, not simply to produce an animation whenever an enemy begins moving.

Desired movement Documented default PC input
Backstep Tap Left Shift without a direction
Directional dodge Hold a WASD direction and tap Left Shift

What turns the red-flash dodge into Ghoststep?

The documented trigger is precise timing at the moment the red-flash attack reaches you, producing movement behind the opponent. Treat that as a timing goal rather than an instruction to dash early as soon as the warning appears. Watch the result of each attempt and adjust one part of your timing at a time.

Why do some prompts say Dash instead of Dodge?

The tutorial terminology can use Dash for the same defensive action. Check the action in your current Controls screen if the wording differs from a guide. Avoid changing a familiar binding merely because two sources use different English labels; first establish whether they are referring to the same action in the game.
